Dubai: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has launched a new social initiative to cover the costs of connecting electricity to houses of low-income Emiratis.
This initiative comes in line with the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minster of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, aiming to relieve low-income Emiratis of the burdens of living.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dewa, said: "Dewa considered launching this initiative in compliance with its social responsibility to relieve the Emirati low-income nationals of living burdens. In this regard, Dewa is going to bear Dh25,000 of the costs of connecting electricity to Emirati nationals in Dubai. However, the remaining amount of the costs (if any) will be borne by the Emiratis themselves according to the regulations in place."
"Dewa will cooperate with Community Development Authority to provide this new service through a system, which entitles Community Development Authority to receive requests from Emiratis, and then carry out social investigation as per its approved terms and criteria. Afterwards, Dewa will receive the names of Emiratis eligible to this.
"Dewa will examine the requests submitted by Community Development Authority. Afterwards, Dewa will deduct the amount of Dh 25,000, which is the maximum amount of aid, from the costs of connection, provided that the applicant pays the remaining amount (if any) prior to initiating the process of connecting," said Al Tayer.
He pointed out: "Deducting this amount from the costs of connecting electricity to Emiratis will contribute to relieving nationals of living burdens, and foster the social ties and unity. Further, we would like to stress the fact that electricity connecting costs for the houses of most UAE nationals are within the amount of contribution."
