Dubai: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) is sending five of its employees to Antarctica as part of the 2041 International Antarctic Expedition.

The expedition highlights the effects of global warming and raises awareness on the need to protect Antarctica from drilling, mining and other activities when the international protocol to protect it expires in 2041.

The two-week expedition starts on March 13, in Ushuaia, Argentina. The move supports Dewa’s vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility, and its strategy to increase environmental awareness, protect natural resources and the ecological footprint.

During Dewa’s celebrations of the 43rd UAE National Day last December, Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Deputy Chairman of Police and Public Security in Dubai, and Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dewa, handed the UAE flag that will be raised in Antarctica to Mohammad Al Shamsi, Senior Manager of Sustainability and Climate Change at Dewa, who is responsible for Dewa’s mission to Antarctica.

“Dewa supports the UAE Vision 2021 to achieve a sustainable environment in the UAE. It also supports the long-term national Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative, launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to establish the UAE as a world leader in green economy and a centre for the export and re-export of green products and technologies. It aims to build a sustainable environment that supports long-term economic growth. We also work to support the Dubai Plan 2021 to make Dubai a city whose resources are sustainable, and whose environmental elements are clean, healthy, and sustainable,” said Al Tayer.
