Sharjah: Sharjah Municipality has launched a weeklong campaign to raise the public awareness about the need of taking precautions to reduce children’s fatalities and injuries due to falls from balconies and windows of high rise buildings.

Themed “My Protection is your Responsibility”, the campaign has been launched in cooperation with the Sharjah Prevention and Safety Authority, Sharjah Urban Planning Council, Sharjah Police and General Directorate of Sharjah Civil Defence.

Engineer Shaikh Khalid Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Prevention and Safety Authority said: “The authority always launches awareness initiatives to ensure the public safety. It cooperates with all government agencies to ensure the security and safety of individuals.”

The campaign stems from the authority’s ongoing endeavours to instill the concept of prevention and raise community awareness about security and safety, and consolidate the ideas related to it among all society members. The campaign aims to prevent children from falling from balconies and windows of buildings”, Shaikh Khalid added.

He underlined the important role of parents in ensuring that safety requirements and measures are in place at their homes, whether apartments in high-rise building or villas.

Shaikh Khalid urged residents to take the necessary precautions to reduce children’s domestic accidents. “The campaign is designed to educate community members about household security and safety measures such as removing all kinds of furniture from balconies, fitting windows with locks in addition to watching children throughout the day,” he said.

Thabit Salem Al Tarifi, Director General of Sharjah Municipality, said that the campaign aims to engage Sharjah’s residents in taking responsibility for protecting their own children from falling from balconies and windows by taking precautionary measures.
