Abu Dhabi: Within the first two months of this year, more than 10,400 fines were issued to jaywalkers who crossed roads from non-designated areas in the capital.
A total of 1,083 fines were also issued to drivers who failed to reduce speed near zebra crossings and give pedestrians the priority to cross the road.
Abu Dhabi Police have called on motorists to reduce speed and give pedestrians the priority for crossing the road.
Major Abdullah Al Qubaisi, head of the Traffic Control Department at the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate, said Abu Dhabi Police are intensifying efforts to ensure a safe crossing for all pedestrians through fining motorists who fail to give priority to pedestrians.
“We are in constant coordination with our partners to improve the traffic safety conditions for pedestrians through the construction of bridges and tunnels and the closure of gaps in fences on different roads,” Al Qubaisi added.
According to traffic rules, failing to abide by signals or crossing the road from a non-designated area by a pedestrian will attract a fine of Dh400.
A motorist who fails to give priority to pedestrians at pedestrian crossings will have to pay a fine of Dh500 and get six black points on his traffic file.
On the other hand, the fine for stopping the vehicle on the zebra crossing is Dh400.
