Abu Dhabi: A group of pupils influenced the farmers in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi to adopt eco-friendly farming practices.

They reached out to farmers through mosques and urged them not to burn green waste and date palm trees, and taught them to make hedges, thatches and compost and so on, Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak said.

The pupils of Khanoor School in Liwa took this initiative as part of Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) Sustainable School Initiative. About 4,299 students from 120 schools enrolled in the initiative, sponsored by BP (a global petroleum major).

A campaign titled “Building an environmentally aware community for sustainability” led to 259 Community Outreach projects taken up by the pupils. This project is an example of participation of not only individuals in environmental conservation but also of corporations such as Shell, TOTAL, and Borouge, which sponsored several other environmental outreach activities carried out by EAD.
