The chairman of the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa), Dr Rashid Alleem, has been appointed as a member of Singapore’s World Water Advisors Council for his efforts in support of sustainable development practices, Sewa announced on Tuesday.

Sewa added that Dr Alleem was also appointed for his expertise in water resource management and the development of a road map to contribute effectively to sustainable global development.

The council is involved with various international organisations, government bodies, universities and research centres on aspects of international water policy. The council is comprised of 12 members of the world’s leading experts and specialists. It is headed by Tan Ji Bo, chairman of the Water Authority of Singapore.

Dr Alleem focused on water policy and management changes that are expected to assure the ideal utilisation of accessible water assets and address the developing demand. He said that the World Council of Water Advisers will strengthen and urge governments and associations to execute worldwide research.

Dr Alleem said saving water from going to waste is an issue that is becoming increasingly crucial in the development of the world’s population, as the needs of the future require resources that can be managed with high efficiency.

He also stressed the need for all countries to stop the unsustainable exploitation of water resources and to develop integrated water resource management and water efficiency plans.
