Dubai: Filipino singer-actress Aiza Seguerra has spoken out on the captivity of Sammy the Shark.

Sammy would be "better off in the wild", she told Gulf News on Monday, on the sidelines of a concert in Dubai.

Aiza is a self-confessed nature lover and has lent her voice to an environment-themed multi-artiste album in the Philippines. "It is sad that the choice should be artificial when it comes to attractions like this," she said.

"I think the whale shark would be better off in its natural habitat," she said, adding, "but if they really want to keep it in the tank, then I guess they must make sure they take care of it really well,"

As Sammy spends her days in captivity, Gulf News readers have continued to express concern and outrage at her "imprisonment".

Sanju Yohannan, 26, had this to say: "Every creature has a role in this world, so if sharks are removed, I think it would affect the ecosystem."

There are however a few who feel that Sammy is better off in a protected environment. Indian expatriate Bindu Sathianesan for one said: "Since Sammy is under the spotlight, I think Atlantis hotel will do its best to take care of her. Sharks are wild animals, and if they are uncomfortable in a place, they will show it by moving frantically. So far Sammy looks comfortable."
