Abu Dhabi: A new 19,662 square metre park is now open to residents at Mohammad Bin Zayed City in the capital.

The park, which was built by the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City at a cost of over Dh12 million, was opened today (March 7) as part of municipal efforts to promote greening during the 36th Plantation Week.

“The municipality is constantly working to offer recreational facilities within Abu Dhabi city and its suburbs. The opening of this new park will spur further infrastructure development, and promote sustainable values,” said Musabbah Al Murar, acting general manager at the municipality.

The park is equipped with seats, tables and play equipment for children. In addition to rubber flooring for safe play, the park features more than 3,300 square metres of paved corridors and 2,256 square metres of sandy area. Shaded canopies also provide comfort for visitors, while modern pumps ensure sustainable irrigation practices.

It is expected to serve residents of Mohammad Bin Zayed City, which is expected to eventually house 215,000 residents.

Officials also called on visitors to protect the landscape and flora, especially as the facility is not fitted with barbecue stations at present.

As part of Plantation Week festivities today (March 7), schoolchildren presented their knowledge of sustainability, and the importance of preserving greenery. An exhibition showcased the latest agricultural and irrigation practices. Al Murar also planted a palm tree to highlight the need for preserving the natural environment.

Earlier this week, the municipality announced that a budget of Dh45 million has been set aside for the development of parks in the southern section of mainland Abu Dhabi, which includes Mohammad Bin Zayed City. Three parks have already been built, including the one that was inaugurated today (March 7), and a contract for the development of a 5,023 square metre fourth park has also been awarded.
