Dubai: Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, yesterday (Tuesday) led the UAE delegation at the 22nd session of the Conference of Parties (COP22) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Marrakech, Morocco.

Shaikh Mansour expressed his thanks and appreciation to Morocco for hosting this important conference, which is one of the major events dedicated to discussing the issues of climate change and developing effective mechanisms to implement the provisions of the Paris Agreement and turn them into action and tangible steps to curb the repercussions of climate change.

He said the UAE’s participation in COP22 reflects the keenness of the UAE’s wise leadership to extend bridges of collaboration and constructive partnership with the international community to counter various challenges facing the world.

“The UAE has shouldered the responsibility to build a diversified economy that is based on new sectors, and can deal with environmental data within the framework of its future vision for the post-oil era.”

He underlined the importance of the Marrakech conference because it offers a common ground for all countries to negotiate and discuss the issues of climate change and step up international efforts to find effective solutions to reduce the effects of climate change and highlight its leading experience in promoting innovative solutions that aim to provide new social and economic opportunities.

On the sidelines of the conference, Shaikh Mansour met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and discussed the conference’s important role in turning the Paris Agreement into practical measures that help achieve the goals of sustainable development and ensure a better future for generations to come.

Shaikh Mansour reiterated the UAE’s willingness to support UN efforts that aim to build strong global partnerships and encourage the green development and building capacity in this domain.

Ban praised the UAE’s leading role in combating the consequences of climate change by adopting policies and initiatives that contribute to strengthening sustainable development.

Shaikh Mansour and Ban discussed a number of issues of common interest and topics on the conference’s agenda.
