Dubai: Almost a dozen companies across the emirates have qualified for a ministry-issued Environmental Performance Certificate (EPC) which regulates that industrial businesses are operating in compliance with environment protection measures.

EPC was launched by the Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW) under Federal Environmental Law No 24/1999 and its amendment for the Protection and the Development of the Environment.

The EPC was developed to encourage businesses to reach compliance goals such as reducing air pollution and conducting environment impact assessment.

Obaid Bin Essa Ahmad, Executive Director for Municipalities Affairs and the Supervisor for Environmental Affairs Sector at MOEW, said the certificate is beneficial to companies who can use it as a marketing tool for their falling in line with local, regional and international standards.

The mechanism for granting the EPC is based on the review of the environmental permit obtained; health, safety and environment (HSE); the implementation of cleaner production, monitoring and control of gaseous emissions and particulate matters, management of chemical substances, and integrated management of solid, non hazardous and hazardous wastes; and treatment and reuse of domestic and industrial wastewaters; as well as noise, odour hazard, and nuisance control.

Commitment

The certificate reflects the commitment of companies to continue to take responsibility towards environmental protection and prevention of pollution.

The companies include Emirates Gas, Horizon Terminals, Jotun Paints, Gulf Centre for Soap & Chemical Industries, Hempel Paints Emirates, National Paints Factories Co Ltd, Emirates Environmental Protection Co, Microsol International, Emirate Cement, Enoc Lube, and RAK Precast.
