Dubai: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) will donate Dh1 million to the Environment Endowment Fund of Mohammad Bin Rashid Global Centre for Endowment Consultancy (MBRGCEC) and the Emirates Wildlife Society in association with World Wildlife Fund (EWS-WWF).

Dewa’s contribution will support environmental initiatives including the development of the Climate Change Research and Learning Programme (CCRLP) in Wadi Wurayah in Fujairah, the authority said in a press release on Friday.

It said the MBRGCEC and EWS-WWF accredited Dewa as a contributor to the Environment Endowment Fund (EEF) after the authority met the requirements and commitments of the Impact Giving Criteria. This initiative is part of Dewa’s effort to protect the environment and the local and international climate, and promote the strategic partnership between Dewa and EWS-WWF.

The EEF will strengthen public awareness about the importance of environmental programmes, and encouraging companies to undertake their corporate social responsibility to support initiatives, studies, and research on the environment, to promote sustainable development and preserve natural resources in the UAE.

Dewa’s Climate Change Research and Learning Programme focuses on the study of the impact of climate change, particularly on freshwater and biodiversity, through a series of scientific research, theoretical lectures, discussions, and research activities (both practical and field visits), as well as various cultural and awareness activities, under the supervision of selected environmental experts.

The two-phase programme will provide participants with an opportunity to learn more about the impact of climate change in the UAE. Dewa organised the first visit to Wadi Wurayah, in Fujairah, in April 2017, for Dewa’s new graduates and its Youth Council. It is scheduled to undertake another field visit in November.

“Dewa supports the efforts of the UAE in various institutions to reduce the impact of climate change. In line with the Year of Giving, declared by President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and following the Global Initiative for Endowment, which was launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and includes the financing of programmes to preserve the environment, we strive to maintain a clean and safe environment and reduce carbon emissions that have become a worldwide threat,” said Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dewa.

“In the light of the partnership between Dewa and EWS-WWF, to develop the research and training programme on climate change in Wadi Wurayah, and to reduce carbon footprint, we recorded Dewa as a supporter of the environment, in recognition of its ongoing efforts to preserve it. We hope that other companies will do the same as Dewa, to protect our rich cultural heritage and contribute to the development of the nation,” said Laila Mustafa Abdul Latif, director general at EWS-WWF.
