Dubai: The third annual Clean Desert drive will begin tomorrow (February 26) as the Dubai Municipality (DM) continues with its efforts to protect the dunes.

The drive, organised under the theme ‘Leave the place clean for others to enjoy it’, will continue its activities up to March 9.

While speaking on the drive, Eng. Salah Ameri, Assistant Director General, Dubai Municipality, said deserts are considered the most important areas in Dubai culturally and environmentally.

“The desert claims the lion’s share of our environmentally important areas in the emirate. Rather, we see it as part and parcel of our culture and tradition; so, we strive to protect it by any possible means,” said Ameri.

He said the campaign is designed to spread the spirit of seeing deserts as part of the life as well as to boost up civic body’s varied efforts to keep them clean, practically.

The campaign, which attracted 8,500 volunteers last year, and helped collect 864 million tonnes of waste, has been widely appreciated, winning the Best Green Drive award given away by Ideas America, a Texas-based institute.

Apart from waste collection, the campaign will include awareness activities involving various schools, colleges and voluntary organisations.
