Dubai: Everybody from motorists and pet owners to housemaids and students will be educated about cleanliness rules in Dubai during the upcoming 24th Clean up The World campaign.
Dubai Municipality will distribute bags to motorists to dispose refuse and also float a giant garbage bag for collecting recyclable materials as part of the campaign to be held on November 19.
The Waste Management Department is gearing up to organise the campaign under the theme, “Our Place, Our Planet, Our Responsibility,” with the support of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the participation of all segments of the local community, the civic body said in a press release on Monday.
More than 11,000 students and 400 government and private establishments, are expected to participate in line with the Year of Giving this time, said Talib Julfar, assistant director-general of Dubai Municipality for Environment and Public Health Services.
The registration for the event is open on the Dubai Municipality website www.dm.gov.ae and will be open till Saturday, November 11, to facilitate those who wish to participate in this volunteer-driven event, which will be held from 8am to 11am, said Julfar.
Abdul Majeed Abdul Aziz Al Saifaie, director, Waste Management Department, and leader of the campaign said: “This year’s campaign will include a number of awareness initiatives and programmes aimed at spreading the culture of volunteering, waste sorting and reducing, and contributing to waste recycling programmes, which will help achieve the strategic directions of the municipality to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. We will organise an activity called the “Giant Waste Bag for Collecting Recyclable Materials.”
“A special competition will be organised for educational institutions to collect recyclable materials to encourage children to adopt a culture of waste sorting,” he said.
To encourage motorists not to throw waste on the road, an initiative will be organised to distribute garbage bags to vehicles by Dubai Municipality volunteers and cleaners.
“A special initiative called, ‘Pamper Your Dog, Keep Your City Clean’ will be implemented to educate owners of pet dogs to comply with the city’s hygiene law,” said Al Saifaie.
Awareness programmes will also include sessions about waste sorting for housemaids and on abandoned and dirty vehicles for vehicle owners.
An event titled ‘Environmental Awareness Oasis’ in Zabeel Park will include many sessions such as recycling workshops, production of art materials from agricultural waste, as well as competitions and awareness sessions for visitors to the park, said Al Saifaie.
A competition will also be organised to collect recyclable materials for the government sector.
