Abu Dhabi: As part of municipal efforts to refurbish public spaces across the capital, another old public park has been renovated and reopened to visitors.

Al Khatam park, located on the Abu Dhabi-Al Ain highway nearby the suburb of Bani Yas, was today reopened by the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City officials. The revamped facility, which is about 45 minutes away by car from the city centre, is now equipped with more play areas for children and amenities for visitors, the Municipality announced in a statement on Thursday.

“This renovation project is in line with our efforts to provide high-end amenities for residents across the city, and extend recreational spaces available to them,” said Musabbah Al Murar, acting general manager at the Municipality.

Over the last few years, the Municipality has worked to redesign, upgrade and refurbish many of Abu Dhabi city’s oldest public parks. Al Khatam Park itself was first established in 1987 and primarily serves residents in Al Khatam and Bani Yas. It spans 57,000 square metres.

One of the park’s new features is a shaded playground for children below the age of three. In addition, scattered play areas for children between the ages of three and 15 have also been renovated. A splash park has also been constructed, in addition to multi-purpose courts for engaging in sports like football and basketball.

A number of stations for barbecuing have also been built around the park. The facility also boasts a sandy area reflecting characteristics of UAE deserts.

The Municipality has also recently renovated a number of other popular parks, including the 145,000 square metre Mushrif Central Park and the 50,000 square metre Capital Garden. New features at these parks include colourful play areas, sports courts and botanical gardens.

The Khalidiyah Public Park, which spans 380,000 square metres, will also soon see 20 per cent of its total area upgraded with sports tracks, sustainable lighting fixtures, play equipment and natural landscaping. Similar improvements will also be undertaken by the Municipality over 90,000 square metres of Al Zafarana Park.
