Sharjah: More than 200 staff from two government bodies participated in a 5km-run in Sharjah on Friday.

Workers and professionals from the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) and the Sharjah International Airport Free Zone (SAIF) participated in the run as part of the Peak Hour initiative.

Sewa launched the Peak Hour initiative to be celebrated every year on July from 2.30pm to 3.30pm as instructed by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

The run, which has categories for men and women, is one of many Peak Hour initiatives to come. The initiative aims to promote a culture of conservation and raise awareness regarding rational use of electricity and reducing toxic emissions.

Dr. Rashid Al Leem, Sewa chairman, said: “Sewa is seeking to prepare all the government and private sectors and individuals to participate in reducing energy consumption during the Peak Hour. Last year, the Conservation Department took up the initiative of spreading the awareness plan outside the UAE boarders.”

“We hope that the initiative will achieve positive results in the UAE, GCC and Arab countries by drawing attention to the importance of consumption and reduction of energy, especially during peak time,” he added.

Eng. Ghada Juma Al Salim, manager of the Conservation Department at Sewa, said everyone was a winner at the run.

“It was a surprise to see over 200 participants as this was our first time organising a marathon. Around 200 participants, including men and women, registered for the event and many of them won medals and trophies. It’s a victorious day for all the participants because everyone was a winner here and it makes me immensely happy to see all the participants being a part of our Peak Hour initiative,” Al Salim said.

The ‘Peak Hour Marathon’, organised by Sewa and SAIF ZONE, was made possible in collaboration with the Government of Sharjah Sports Council, Sharjah Municipality and Sharjah Police.
