Dubai: A 13-year-old Emirati inventor was all smiles as the University of Manchester honoured him for his impressive list of inventions.

The UK university honoured Adeeb Al Beloushi and his sister Dana, 11, for their scientific achievements in the fields of medicine and and space sciences.

In 2013, Adeeb made headlines when he made a car seatbelt heart monitor, a cleaning robot and light-weight prosthetic limbs.

He has also invented a fireproof helmet with a camera system to help see in emergencies.

Dana was recognised for being the youngest Emirati to experience training at the US-based National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

The ceremony at the university was organised by James Baker, business director for the National Graphene Institute of the University of Manchester, on behalf of Professor Sir Konstantin Novoselov, a Russian-British physicist who won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics. Present were Dr Aravind Vijayaraghavan, nanotechnology researcher; Dennis Cortez of the University of Manchester, and Paul Fontaine, chief technology architect.

Baker conveyed to Adeeb and Dana a verbal message on behalf of Novoselov, in which he expressed his admiration for their scientific achievements at such a young age. Novoselov also urged them to continue their work, no matter what obstacles stand in their way. He reaffirmed his confidence that Adeeb and Dana have already left their mark and are now among top pioneering scientists.

Later, Baker took Adeeb and Dana on a tour in the National Graphene Institute, briefing them about graphene scientific research labs.

Cortez also praised Adeeb and Dana’s scientific skills.

Later, the brother-sister duo were also received by Ambassador Sulaiman Al Mazroui at the UAE Embassy in London.
