Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police have launched a traffic awareness programme to raise alertness levels among motorists, particularly school bus drivers, Colonel Abdullah Al Mahri, acting head of the traffic institute, said in a statement yesterday.

The awareness programme will be held in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and will last for three months. “The programme will include a series of traffic awareness lectures to attain the highest levels of traffic safety among all segments of the society,” Al Mahri told Gulf News.

“Motorists and school bus drivers should abide by the regulations, keep an eye on the pedestrians’ safety, and adhere to speed limits to prevent the risk of accidents,” he added.

Captain Salem Ali Al Ketbi, the training officer at the traffic institute division, also gave a number of lectures focusing on the need to abide by speed regulations especially in the vicinity of the pedestrian crossings in the industrial or residential areas and commercial centres and on allowing pedestrians to pass in these zones.

“Two traffic awareness lectures, as part of the traffic campaign, have been conducted to raise alertness among bus drivers from Arab and non-Arab nationalities about everything related to traffic safety,” Captain Mohsin Saeed Al Mansouri, a police officer, said.

The Police in Abu Dhabi and Dubai have already intensified campaigns around schools to ensure smooth flow of traffic and the safety of schoolchildren.
