Dubai : A Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB) study reveals that most parents feel Dubai schools are generally up to the mark.

According to the survey, released on Wednesday, about 70 per cent of parents believe Dubai schools met most parameters on a check list drawn up by the education body. Over 80,000 parents were asked to rate schools on issues ranging from tuition to health and safety standards and whether the schools met 15 other parameters.

This is the first time the parent of virtually every student in Dubai was asked to rate the performance of their children's mentors, according to a DSIB statement.

However, some parents also seized the opportunity to air grievances. A parent of a second grader told the DSIB: "In PT (physical training), if a child gets injured, no first aid or care is provided."

Unprofessional

Another parent said, "The administration [of my child's school] is unprofessional as they keep promising things but never deliver."

DSIB chief Jameela Al Muhairi said: "Our inspectors read the comments before going into a school; it's a different perspective for them to take on board when they are assessing a school… It really does mean that parents are being given the opportunity to influence education policy."

The DSIB's own official report on school standards is due in May and a summary of parents' views will be included in the 20-page book for each of the 210 schools covered.
