Dubai: The latest solutions and services for people with disabilities are on show at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre until Thursday, as part of the AccessAbilities Expo. From mobility to communication, the show covers a variety of sectors.

Smart Car

Elbee is a small car that is driven straight from the wheelchair. The front of the car opens up to extend a ramp accessible by wheelchair. Once inside, the driver operates the car from the wheelchair, which is secured into the cabin. Already in use on roads in Europe, the car is coming to the UAE at an estimated price of $30,000 (Dh110,100).

Care delivered

The Sanad Mobile Therapy Unit is like a clinic on wheels, designed and equipped to provide early detection and early intervention therapy services to children in their own neighbourhoods, courtesy of the Community Development Authority (CDA). Now, the CDA Sanad RV App can be downloaded for free, allowing the users to book an appointment, find the RV route and plan their children’s session.

Sign language app

Residents with hearing or speech difficulties can download the free Sanad Relay Centre Smart App which lets them use sign language with an expert on video conference on the mobile phone. The expert then relays all the communication between the user and the third party by speaking to the third party on speaker phone.

Speak Easy

A new device by a US company claims to treat stuttering by using an ear device that delays sounds by milliseconds, producing a choral effect that allows users to speak without a stutter. SpeechEasy, which costs around Dh18,000, is available in the UAE through Health Mart. “Through altering the speech and sounds heard by the user, the mind is tricked into avoiding stuttering,” said Cedric Villanada, Marketing Coordinator, Health Mart

Sanad mobile therapy Unit, Sanad rely centre and a lot more are presented at the Community Development Authority (CDA) stand in the AccessAbilities Expo 2016, the event held under the patronage of Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates airline and Group, aiming to support UAE’s vision to create a fully inclusive and disability-friendly country by 2020.
