Dubai: A year after a prominent school shifted from a prime property near Al Wasl Road, citing high rents, another institution, which appears to be cashing in on the crash in market prices, has moved in.

Kalloor Guruswamy, General Manager of JSS World School, said the new CBSE international school will operate from the same premises that once belonged to Modern High School, which operated from the building for 25 years.

Modern High had stirred a controversy when it shifted to its new campus at Nad Al Sheba. "Rentals have dropped due to the recession," Guru-swamy said, adding that JSS had taken the prime property on a 20-year lease at Dh7 million per annum.

He said the school will spend Dh2 million on renovation. "This is necessary as we will have 78 smart classrooms with ICT facilities," he said, adding that JSS World is the first CBSE international curriculum school set up by the Indian group JSS Maha-vidyapeetha, which runs an ICSE school at Al Barsha, in addition to 120 schools in India.

He said admissions are open from KG 1 to Grade VIII, though the plan is to increase the classes to Grade 12.

"The school has a great location and vast play areas," he said, and it has a built-up area of around 2.5 million square feet. "The monthly fees range from Dh1,000 for KG 1 and 2 to Dh1,400 for Grades VII and VIII." The average bus fee is around Dh500 a month, he added.
