Ras Al Khaimah: A heavy vehicle ran over a Somali teenager while he was cycling on Al Nakeel Street, police said.

The victim's body was smashed under the vehicle's tyres. A senior officer at the Traffic and Licensing Department said the 13-year-old victim identified as A.S. was on his bicycle when he was hit by a heavy vehicle, whose 45-year-old Pakistani driver identified as A.K. did not see the teenager.

The officer said the driver was stopped by passers by who notified him about the accident and reported the accident to the emirate's authorities.

Detained

Police vehicles and ambulances arrived at the scene but the medics pronounced the victim dead at the scene of the accident.

The victim did not hold any official identity documents so the body was referred to Saqr Hospital. The police initiated an investigation into the accident and the Pakistani driver was detained.

The victim's family heard of the accident but never expected the victim to be their son and they became suspicious when their son did not show up.

They contacted the police who allowed them to have a look at the body for identification, after they recognised the destroyed bicycle. The family members also identified their dead son.

The authorities delivered the body to the family for burial after the family provided all the necessary official documents.
