Abu Dhabi: A real estate company originally exonerated of culpability in the electrocution death of a woman in a shower is back in court.

The company is being accused of causing the death of a woman who was apparently electrocuted while taking a shower in her home, the Abu Dhabi Court of Appeals heard on Sunday.

On hearing the screams of the victim, her sister came to the rescue and called the Civil Defence.

According to court documents, faulty wiring of water heater caused the showerhead to become dangerous.

When rescuers broke down the bathroom door, the victim was found lying on the floor with the showerhead in her hand, suggesting that the electric shock may have passed from the device to the victim. A firefighter who touched her also received an electric shock. They then turned off the power supply to the house before proceeding further.

Earlier, the victim’s father had allegedly complained to the real estate company of the sound of a spark whenever the heater is turned on.

At the Court of First Instance, the company was found not guilty of the charges against it.

However, the presiding judge at Monday’s Abu Dhabi Court of Appeals session said: “I do not know how that could have been possible [that they were found innocent].”

The case has been adjourned until January 25.
