Abu Dhabi: A 33-year-old Arab woman has been arrested for stealing Dh11 million from a government organisation, the Abu Dhabi Police announced in a statement on Saturday.

The suspect, H.M.K, had stolen the funds and lavished them on S.M.A, with whom she was in a relationship. S.M.A was seven years younger than the suspect, and had promised to marry her, even though it turned out that he was already married.

According to Colonel Tariq Al Ghoul, deputy director of the criminal investigation at the Abu Dhabi Police, H.M.K used the funds to pay her lover’s debts, buy luxurious cars for him, purchase special licence plates for her lover and his brother’s cars, book first-class air tickets to Europe, and even buy expensive watches and trinkets for him and his family. She also gave him some of the stolen funds as cash gifts.

The official added that H.M.K had exploited her role as the director of a customer services department to embezzle Dh11 million. According to the Police, she had authorised payments for a higher value, then wired the extra money to S.M.A. The Abu Dhabi Police has so far been able to recover some of the gifts and the stolen money, including seven cars bought with the funds. These include two Rolls Royces, one Land Cruiser, one Nissan Patrol, one luxury sedan, one Nissan GTR, and a Lexus four-wheeler.

Meanwhile, the suspect has confessed to her crime, while her lover and his brother have admitted to deceiving and exploiting H.M.K. The case has now been referred to the courts.
