Sharjah: Two  drug dealers were arrested after officers found a large quantity of banned narcotics in their possession, said a senior police official.

Brigadier Mohammad Rashid Bayat, Director of Sharjah Police Operations, said the suspects are Iranian nationals caught peddling quantities of narcotic substances among residents and promoting drug addiction.

During the raid of the suspects’ house, huge quantities of crystal heroin were confiscated, Brig.Bayat said.

The suspects were arrested in a sting carried out by Sharjah police and federal anti-narcotics police, in addition to security agencies in the country.

Authorities started investigations after receiving information about illegal activity carried out by the two suspects.

The suspects confessed to their crime, said police.

The suspects were referred to the Public Prosecution for further action.

Brigadier Bayat  urged parents to constantly monitor the company their children keep.

“The UAE has a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal drug use and drug trafficking is a serious offence,” said Brig Bayat.

The rate of illegal drug use in the UAE is low compared to the average internationally.

“Possession of the smallest amount of any illegal drug is punishable by a minimum of four years’ imprisonment,” he said.

Meanwhile, the renewed war on drugs in schools, on streets and in public places is more important than ever, he added.

UAE is considered the first country in the Arab world and the fourth globally in identifying new drug trafficking trends and countering illicit production, trafficking and drug abuse.
