Sharjah: Alleged dirty dancing at a wedding celebration has landed a UAE celebrity in hot water with the authorities.

Sharjah Police said in a statement on Monday that a man whom they have identified as Khalid Hurriyah — a “public figure in the UAE” — was captured in a video posted on the internet dancing with a woman in a manner not befitting proper etiquette in public.

Hurriya is a Sharjah businessman and former chairman of the UAE’s Fans Association football team.

The identity of the man dancing in the video has yet to be tested in court.

Hurriyah could not be reached for comment by Gulf News at press time on Monday.

His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has addressed a letter to Sharjah Police’s commander-in-chief ordering an investigation into the incident to cull details about those involved in the video footage.

Dr Shaikh Sultan wrote to police: “I order you to investigate the incident of the immoral video footage which occurred in Khor Fakkan and bring to justice all those involved and who helped in this immoral act to preserve the dignity and to protect the young generation from corruption.”

The call for a full probe into the video footage will determine the circumstances surrounding the celebrations in which a group of women and men appeared dancing in a way that could be described as indecent.

The video, which spread on social media last week, apparently depicts dozens of men dancing with a group of women in a questionable way during a wedding party of a family member of a famous television broadcaster in Khor Fakkan last week.

Police said the video aroused anger among UAE residents, some of whom requested authorities to take action.

The order, police said, was given to protect the young generation from engaging in such activities to preserve the dignity of society.

The video first appeared on social media but it is not clear who spread the clip and posted it on the web.

The incident is considered a first of its kind in Sharjah.
