Abu Dhabi: Two food supplier employees have been arrested for providing expired items to a girls’ school in the Western Region, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department announced in a statement sent on Saturday.

The men were taken into custody after 120 boxes of expired foodstuff were found on display in the school canteen.

The Public Prosecution is investigating the incident with the company’s owner, who is legally responsible for the management and follow-up of the employees, the statement said.

Commenting on the incident, official sources at the General Attorney’s office said that such violations greatly hamper the health and safety of residents. Each person found guilty of such a crime could therefore be subjected to two years in jail, as well as incur a fine of Dh10,000.

The source also said that the school had been asked to establish methods to rigorously monitor the contracted food supplier.
