Ras Al Khaimah: A three-month-old baby and his mother were killed and four others, including two children, were injured when two cars collided here on Tuesday morning.
The driver of one vehicle, the 36-year-old father of the child, collided with another vehicle as he tried to jump the red light, Colonel Salim Rashid Rabia’a, director of Al Ras police station, told Gulf News.
The Arab father was accompanied by his wife, in her 30s and three sons, aged three months, three years and seven years.
The police said the father tried to jump the red light but collided with a vehicle coming from the other side driven by a 30-year-old Emirati motorist. The crash resulted in the death of the mother and her baby and four others sustained serious injuries, including the driver of the other vehicle.
The bodies were moved to a morgue while the injured were taken to hospital.
Brigadier Dr Mohammad Saeed Al Hamidi, general director of the general directorate of central operations at Ras Al Khaimah Police, urged motorists to follow traffic laws and regulations. He also warned that the police will take tough action against those who jump the red light, adding that this irresponsible behaviour is one of the most serious traffic offences and often results in fatalities and grave injuries.
Most of the violations recorded were a result of speeding and drivers attempting to cross the junction before the signal turned red.
He said drivers repeat the violation despite police warnings about the dangers of jumping the red light,
According to the Federal Traffic Law, motorists who jumps a red signal are fined Dh800, given eight black points, and their vehicle is impounded for a period of 15 days.
“The traffic control cameras, installed at various intersections across Ras Al Khaimah, operate with state-of-the-art technology and efficiency,” he said.
Latest statistics released by Ras Al Khaimah Police in August showed that speeding and jumping red signals were the top causes of road deaths and serious injuries. The police fined 4,738 drivers in just one week for flouting traffic rules.
