Ajman: Ajman Police have arrested three men for allegedly robbing passengers using the illegal taxi service they operated.

The accused, of African origin, picked up passengers in their illegal taxi and drove them to deserted areas before robbing them.

Explaining the modus operandi of the gang, Colonel Khalid Mohammad Al Nuaimi, director of external areas at Ajman Police, said the gang of three would pick up passengers from the streets of Ajman in a rented vehicle, with one driving and the other two pretending to be passengers.

Al Nuaimi said that once the vehicle reaches a remote area, the driver would claim that his money had been stolen and would request the passengers to hand over their wallets for a search. When the unsuspecting passenger handed over his wallet, he would be robbed and forced to get off.

Al Nuaimi said that the Manama police station received several complaints about the alleged criminal activities of the gang and formed a team to investigate the case.

The team managed to identify the suspects after investigation and arrested them from their hideout.

The case was referred to the public prosecution after the suspects admitted to the crime.
