Sharjah: Sharjah Police are urging car owners not to leave valuables in their vehicles following a spate of thefts from parked cars in the Buhairah areas of Sharjah, say police.

The Buhairah police station did not release numbers to indicate how bad the spike in the theft of valuables is affecting the area but said it is enough to alert car owners in the neighbourhoods.

There have been an increasing number of complaints about such thefts from Buhairah police station zones including Al Nahda, Al Buhairah, Al Majaz, Al Khan, Al Taawun and Al Mamzar.

Captain Abdul Aziz Al Mu’aini, director of Investigations Branch at the Buhairah police station, said despite police campaigns [in English and Arabic] and efforts to educate residents on how to protect their properties including cars from theft, residents still insist on repeating their mistakes such as leaving their vehicles unlocked.

Since the beginning of the year, police said owners of vehicles have been reporting damage to their cars and valuables stolen.

Detectives arrested some suspects after receiving reports from car owners about the burglaries and referred them to the public prosecution for further action.

Capt Al Mu’aini said that Sharjah Police will continue their efforts and anti-theft awareness campaign.

He advised residents again not to leave their cars with the engines running, and with no one inside, or leave the car doors unlocked, or leave the car keys with unauthorised cleaners.

They also urged people not to leave any valuables in vehicles, to not park in isolated or poorly lit areas and avoid parking in sand lots for long stretches. Residents are also urged to invest in car alarms.
