Neighbours can be your best insurance when you are travelling abroad for the summer, says Sharjah Police.

To ensure that the homes and villas of travelling residents are not robbed, Sharjah Police have launched a new security plan to ensure the safety of homes of people who lock up their homes while going on holidays.

‘My safety is my neighbour’s safety’ is similar to Neighbourhood Watch programmes in North America which rely upon neighbours to watch out for each others’ homes at all times and call in authorities when needed to report suspicious strangers seen prowling in residential areas.

Brigadier Mohammad Rashid Bayat, Director of Sharjah Police Operations, said the initiative encourages people to cooperate with the police and contribute to ensuring security in their neighbourhood. The police will also educate those who intend to travel abroad during the summer season about safety procedures they need to follow before leaving.

He said people wishing to protect their homes must participate in the programme titled “My safety is my neighbour’s safety” by registering for it.

“The main purpose of the programme is make members of society play an active role in protecting and reporting any negative phenomenon and malpractice to the police. Neighbours of a travelling person should immediately report to the police any suspicious movements around their neighbour’s homes. We want to inculcate in people’s minds the importance of keeping good relations with neighbours and to spread the culture of respecting the neighbour’s right among people and to ensure safety and security of residential areas.

“People can participate in the programme by logging on to the Sharjah police website www.shjpolice.gov.ae and filling in an application form.”

Police have also allocated a mobile number for the service in Sharjah — 052 700 7999 — as well as 901. For the eastern and central region of the emirate, please dial 09 2370000 or 06 882 2222, respectively.
