Ras Al Khaimah: Police are hunting for the vandal who set fire to a speed radar in Ras Al Khaimah on Wednesday.

An unidentified person targeted the device on Ghaleila road in the early hours on Wednesday, a police officer told Gulf News.

In a similar incident last year, the radar at the same location was set on fire.

The radar cost Dh250,000 to replace and was reinstalled in August last year.

Colonel Salem Rabia’a, director of Khor Khuwair police station, said the operation room at Ras Al Khaimah police received a tip off from a local caller alerting them that the radar was on fire.

“We don’t know the suspect in the current case and have no idea about his or her motivation,” he said.

He told Gulf News the police have formed a team to crack down on violators as well as to provide increased patrols on the streets.

“The person responsible for burning the radar will be arrested soon. He or she will be punished according to the UAE law,” he added.

Several incidents of radar damage have taken place in Ras Al Khaimah in the last year including glass on the radars smashed and paint sprayed on them.

On August 18 last year, the same radar was set on fire just three days after it was installed.

Ras Al Khaimah police arrested an Emirati man for the crime on November 20.

The Emirati man, identified as A.S.A., said he set fire to the radar as an act of revenge for hefty speeding fines imposed on him.

“After investigations for nearly three months, we succeeded in arresting the suspect who burnt and damaged the speed radar on Ghaleila Road,” said Al Za’abi.

Lieutenant Colonel Adnan Ali Al Za’abi, head of preventive security in RAK, said Major General Shaikh Talib Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Commander in Chief of Ras Al Khaimah Police, had given instructions to form a special team f and track down the person who targeted the newly installed radar.
