Sharjah: An abandoned newborn was discovered by passers-by on a public road in Al Qassimyah area of Sharjah on Tuesday evening, an official at Sharjah Police told Gulf News.

The baby girl was in remarkably good health, authorities said, despite being ditched in cool temperatures by an unknown mother who police are now seeking.

The incident was reported to police operations room, then to Al Gharb Police station.

Police officers transported the baby to Al Qasimi Hospital where medical staff estimated the age of the girl to be a few days.

The baby was reported to be in stable condition.

The baby will be transferred to child protection committee workers in Sharjah after she is given all necessary vaccination in hospital and deemed fit to be released.

Police, meanwhile, are attempting to locate the parents who face not only charges of abandonment and endangerment to a child, but also a slew of other charges related to having a child out of wedlock, which is illegal in Sharjah.

Authorities said the latest child discovery is the fifth such incident in a rash of child-abandonment cases in less than three months in the emirate. On October 11, a one-month-old baby girl was found around 1am on the doorstep of a villa in Al Rahmanyah area of Sharjah on early Monday.

On September 25, A three-month old baby was found abandoned in Al Kuwaiti Hospital, left on a chair at the women’s reception at 4.50pm.

A nine-month-old baby was found abandoned on September 20 in the car park of Al Safeer Mall in Al Majaz, Sharjah. She was found sometime during noon in a plastic bag. The man who found the baby said he spotted her after hearing her cry.

Similarly, an Indian three-year-old was abandoned by his parents on September 4 at the Khor Fakkan Beach and police have yet to identify the boy’s parents.

Last year, four mothers were imprisoned by Sharjah Courts after they were found guilty of abandoning their infants, who were born out of wedlock. They were charged with one year in jail followed by deportation with their babies.
