Dubai: An Asian employee in a government department in Dubai has allegedly jumped from the top of one of the bridges on Shaikh Zayed Road, in an attempt to commit suicide, according to a senior police official.

Police said the man who works for a government department went to one of the bridges on Shaikh Zayed Road in Dubai yesterday morning, and reportedly jumped on the road amidst heavy traffic.

Brigadier Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Director of Dubai Police’s Criminal and Investigation Department, said yesterday that the man who jumped from the bridge was seriously injured but he was not run over by any car. “The injured man was airlifted by the police rescue helicopter to Rashid Hospital,” he said. He added that the busy Shaikh Zayed Road was closed for some time in order to rescue the injured man. Brigadier Al Mansouri told Gulf News that the police are investigating the incident.

He said the man jumped while there was heavy traffic on the road at around 7am. “His action could have caused traffic chaos on the road leading to many accidents but timely intervention by the police avoided possible disaster,” he said. He said the police cleaned the blood from the road and opened it for traffic in a shortest possible time.
