Sharjah: An Arab man has been arrested by Sharjah Police for allegedly assaulting and robbing a number of petrol station attendants in Sharjah, police said on Tuesday.

Colonel Ebrahim Al Ajel, director-general of Criminal and Investigation Department at Sharjah Police, said the suspect of Egyptian nationality, who is in his 20s, threatened employees of one petrol station each located on Sharjah Ring Road, Industrial Area 7 and in Muweilah. The suspect attacked the petrol stations’ staff with an iron bar before making off with the cash collections.

The police operations room of a neighbouring emirate were alerted by Sharjah Police around 2.30am after the suspect fled from the emirate in a private car.

Within two hours of the crime, the police team tracked down the suspect to one of the hotels in Sharjah and arrested him. They found in his possession the stolen cash and the iron bar.

The suspect had worked for some time in a government financial institution, the police said.

The suspect, charged with armed robbery, has been referred to the Public Prosecution.
