Dubai: An expatriate man employed by Sharjah Municipality was arrested in Dubai for aiding domestic helpers to abscond from their sponsors.

The General Directorate for Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai arrested the African man for encouraging domestic helpers to run away from their sponsors and arranging part time and full time jobs for them with other families.

Senior official from GDRFA said yesterday that following the trap which was prepared according to legal procedures, the suspect was arrested in Dubai accompanied by another person from another African country, along with three housemaids of the same nationality. Major General Mohammad Al Merri, Director General of the GDRFA told Gulf News that every effort is being made to stop the employment of illegal workers and urged the public to cooperate with the authorities to curb the menace.

He also warned residents from employing illegal workers. "We will be very tough with those who offend the law or threaten the country's safety and security," he said.

Lt Col Khalaf Al Gaith, Assistant of the Director General for Follow-up and Investigation Department, said the public can use the toll free number 8005111 to report on illegal workers. The information provided by the public will be confidential, he said.
