Sharjah: A 31-year-old Emirati man identified as M.G. died of a heroin overdose at his friend’s house in Sharjah on Wednesday morning, police say.

His Emirati friend, also aged 31 and identified as A.S., was admitted to the intensive care unit of Al Qasimi Hospital in critical condition.

The incident was reported to police by the brother of A.S. when he discovered his brother in critical condition and his friend M.G. dead.

Police said heroin was found at the scene.

Both men were moved to Al Qasimi Hospital at around 7am where M.G was pronounced dead while A.S. was in critical condition and was moved to the ICU and put under police surveillance.

Police said initial investigation showed the man apparently died of a heroin overdose … they are also investigating whether a criminal act is involved in his death,

Wasit Police said they were still investigating the incident.

As many as 30 Emirati men are reported to have died across the UAE in 2013 as a result of drug overdoses, Ganem Ali Al Mansouri of Sharjah Public Prosecution said.

The victims were aged between 18-38.
