Abu Dhabi: A GCC national has been caught with 35,000 narcotic pills and six kilograms of hashish which he had reportedly smuggled through the Ras Al Dara border point in Ras Al Khaimah. The RAK and Umm Al Quwain Police joined efforts in apprehending the suspect.

The police had received information that a GCC national had smuggled an amount of drugs through the Ras Al Dara port with the aim of selling the same and handing the drugs to two Arab individuals living in one of the UAE’s cities.

The police then coordinated with Customs officials in the targeted port in order to inspect the suspect’s vehicle in the usual manner and allow him to pass through into the UAE without raising any suspicion that he was being monitored.

Upon reaching the port, the man was accompanied by his wife and children to disguise the purpose of his trip, police said.

The suspect was followed until he reached Umm Al Quwain where a sting operation was conducted and the man was apprehended. When his vehicle was extensively searched, 35,000 narcotic pills and six kilograms of hashish were found hidden in secret pockets. The two Arab men were arrested in the same emirate in another operation.

In May, police also caught another GCC national who was reportedly found with 2.75 million narcotic pills that he had attempted to smuggle through the Ghuwaifat port and into Abu Dhabi. He had also made skeletal modifications to his vehicle in order to be able to hide the illegal products from authorities and Customs officials.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) estimated the street value of the pills at around Dh104 million.
