Sharjah: Sharjah Police have arrested a man on charges of stealing private pictures and a video clip of a young girl and blackmailing her demanding money.

According to Sharjah Police, the suspect, a Syrian, created fake accounts on social media and befriended young women online by posing as a girl only to take advantage of them once he had won their trust. He allegedly threatened the victims that he would publish their private pictures on the internet if they failed to pay up the money he demanded.

Sharjah Police launched an investigation after receiving a complaint from a victim whose pictures and video the accused had allegedly obtained through her private social media account.

According to police, the suspect allegedly used the private pictures of the girl for immoral purposes and also forced several others to send him money.

A special team of Sharjah Police carried out an investigation, following which the suspect was tracked down. Following interrogations, the suspect admitted to his crime and the case has been transferred to public prosecution.

Police advised women to be extra cautious when interacting with strangers online.

Sharjah Police also called on parents to monitor their children and their use of social media.
