Fujairah: A Filipina housemaid was allegedly tortured to death by a 36-year-old Sri Lankan housemaid in Fujairah.

The Filipina housemaid, 33, allegedly died due to injuries allegedly sustained as a result of beatings and torture by her 36-year-old colleague who worked in the same house in Al Faseel area in Fujairah.

Lieutenant Colonel Dr Saeed Al Hassani, acting director of Media and Public Relations Department in Fujairah Police, told Gulf News that the police operations room received information from Fujairah Hospital that they had received the body of a Filipina and they suspected foul play.

Fujairah Police opened an investigation after the Filipina was brought dead to hospital and doctors said the death was a result of beatings.

Lt Col Al Hassani said the initial examination by emergency doctors found several injuries and bruises on different parts of her body. The doctors also found that the victim had suffered severe weight loss after moving to the house of her sponsor.

Lt Col Al Hassani said that police investigations showed the victim had been beaten severely by her Sri Lankan colleague. The accused was arrested and, during the interrogation, the Sri Lankan maid confessed that she beat the Filipina maid severely following a heated argument.

The Emirati sponsor has been summoned by police for questioning.

The case has been referred to the public prosecution for further investigations.

Meanwhile, the body of the Filipina has been transferred to the forensic laboratory for an autopsy.

Lt Col Al Hassani said families who hire housemaids from different nationalities in one house must watch them closely and intervene in case of any disputes between them. He also urged them to notice changes in the behaviour of their maids and inform police.
