Dubai: A student has been accused of threatening to send the mafia after a woman visitor to kill her if she refused to drop her theft complaint against him.

The 24-year-old Iranian student, H.S., was said to have verbally threatened to kill his compatriot, F.M., after she lodged a theft complaint against him.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the defendant threatened the woman verbally, saying that he would send the mafia after her to kill her.

The student failed to show up at the Dubai Court of First Instance where he was scheduled to be prosecuted on Sunday.

“The suspect will be sentenced in absentia on April 7,” said presiding judge Maher Salama Al Mahdi in courtroom seven on Sunday.

The victim’s 28-year-old Iranian friend, F.K., claimed during prosecution questioning that the incident happened seven days after F.M. lodged a theft complaint against the suspect on March 12, 2012.

“We were at my residence when the suspect called F.M. on her mobile phone. F.M. switched on the speaker phone of her mobile and I heard the suspect saying that he would kill F.M. He claimed that he was in Istanbul and that he would have the mafia chase my friend and kill her,” claimed F.K.

Prosecution records did not specify which mafia the suspect was referring to.
