Dubai: Dubai Police are hunting for a security guard who stole Dh5 million from a money transport vehicle during refilling cash at an ATM in a shopping mall, Gulf News has learnt.
A Dubai Police official said the incident happened at 10:30pm on Saturday at a shopping mall in Deira area. An African security guard ran away with Dh5 million, the official said.
“The suspect and his workmate were near the ATM in the mall when the suspect distracted the second guard. The suspect told the second guard that he is going to the bathroom and took the bag containing the money and escaped,” the official said.
The second security guard kept waiting for the suspect for a while, then he informed his company which alerted Dubai Police.
Dubai Police questioned the security guard who denied having any knowledge that the suspect was planning to steal the cash.
“The suspect, in his 20s, recently joined the company. We alerted all the ports and are still trying to arrest him,” the official said.
However, police said the money transfer company was following the necessary safety procedures and the robbery was an individual act.
Recently, Dubai Police introduced a special money transfer bag, which has special mechanism to prevent crimes against money-transfer companies.
