Dubai: The Chief of Dubai Police on Saturday called on Hamas to launch an internal inquiry into the murder of their senior commander at a Dubai hotel last month.

Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim told Gulf News that a Hamas member had played a significant role in the killing of Mahmoud Al Mabhouh. The Hamas man had leaked information on Al Mabhouh's whereabouts to the suspected assassins, he added.

The Police Chief said Mahmoud Al Zahar, a senior Hamas leader, has requested the UAE to hand over the two Palestinian suspects held here in connection with the assassination.

"I ask him to initiate an internal investigation because I am certain that there has been a security breach from their side,"Lt Gen Dahi said.

He also said the suspects' earlier visit to Dubai has been recorded and in the past year some of them had entered the UAE at least twice to monitor Al Mabhouh and plan the operation.

Lt Gen Dahi said the cooperation from Germany, Austria, France, Ireland and Britain is good and that he is sure that their intelligence agencies did not cooperate with Mossad.

Regarding comments attributed to him in the Israeli daily newspaper Yediot Ahronot, Dahi denied speaking to the newspaper that extensively quoted him on alleged visits of some of the suspects.
