Sharjah: Sharjah Police have launched a manhunt after an expensive white gold necklace with diamonds was stolen from an exhibition at Sharjah Expo, an official at Sharjah Police told Gulf News.

The theft was discovered at the end of the Mideast Watch and Jewellery Show, which was held at Sharjah Expo from April 5 to 9.

The police operations room received call on Friday from the store owner who reported the incident.

The store owner told police that he discovered the necklace, which was worth Dh400,000, was missing on the last day of the exhibition as he was packing his jewellery pieces.

He told police that he did not immediately notice that the necklace was missing since there was a huge number of visitors on the last day of the show and he was busy.

The necklace was owned by K.S. store.

Al Buhairah police station is probing the incident.

Meanwhile, the chief executive officer of Sharjah Expo Cenre, Saif Mohammad Al Midfa, told Gulf News that their investigations is still ongoing.

He said that the expo management provided the premises with full security, including a CCTV operation room, a strongroom to keep their gold pieces, and increased number of security personnel.

This is the first incident of its kind here, Al Midfa said.

Al Midfa pointed out that more than 500 gold owners participated in the Mideast Watch and Jewellery Show and no such incident had been reported so far over the holding of 40 exhibitions, with two a year.

Al Midfa advised gold owners who participate in the exhibition to hire more employees to serve customers as they own expensive pieces as well as to keep an eye on their jewellery.

If the gold owners show negligence in their display …. we will send to them a written warning but the management will take action if the negligence is repeated.

He pointed out that some of the gold owners hire only one person in order to reduce their cost and at the same time they have expensive gold pieces. The employee cannot protect the gold pieces and serve customers at the same time.

Al Midfa said that over the past years the management has noticed that some gold owners used tricks to get insurance claims but when the records were checked, their false claims are discovered. Thereafter they were not allowed to participate in the exhibition.

“We are considered the first management in UAE in running the Watch and Jewellery Show ... and we still provide our customers with the best,” Al Midfa said
