Dubai: The resident of a Discovery Gardens flat, from where a woman fell to her death while practising ballet on the balcony last month, has been charged with having consensual sex with her.

The Public Prosecution referred the resident, an Egyptian engineer, to the Dubai Misdemeanours Court, where he will be prosecuted for having sex with the Eastern European woman, Gulf News learnt on Wednesday.

Interrogations following the death revealed that the man had sex with the woman, whom he described as his girlfriend, sources close to the investigation told Gulf News .

The suspect admitted to the public prosecutor who questioned him that he was having an affair with the 28-year-old woman. No date for the hearing has been scheduled yet.

According to primary investigations, the suspect said he was summoned for questioning from his workplace in Abu Dhabi.

He said that the police questioned him for almost a day about his relationship with the deceased without informing him about the woman's accidental death.

A police officer quoted witnesses as saying they saw the Eastern European woman dancing on the narrow balcony of the second-floor apartment in Discovery Gardens near Ibn Battuta Mall around lunchtime, minutes before she fell.

The defendant claims that police referred him to the Public Prosecution where he was reportedly questioned about his alleged relationship with the deceased.

A source told the newspaper: "The defendant told prosecutors that the girl couldn't afford to rent a flat on her own, so she moved in to live with him& He admitted that she stayed with him for nearly one month and he confessed that they had consensual sex.

"The defendant said: 'They informed me about her death after two days. They asked me very private questions about our relationship.'"

"He also told the prosecutors that on the day of the incident he repeatedly phoned her but there was no reply," the source said.

The suspect pleaded guilty during questioning. A hearing is expected to be scheduled soon this month.
