Dubai: An Indian man was yesterday cleared of running a brothel after he convinced a court that his role was limited to cooking and serving food in a flat in Naif.

The Dubai Appeals Court yesterday acquitted the 30-year-old Indian suspect, S.A., for lack of corroborated evidence that he was running or was involved in running a brothel.

"No, Sir, I did not run a brothel. I worked in the flat as a cook and my job was to serve food. I had nothing to do with the brothel. I am innocent," submitted S.A. when he defended himself before the appellate court.

Presiding Judge Eisa Al Sharif said in courtroom 20 yesterday: "The court has overturned the primary judgment [one year in prison followed by deportation] and acquitted the suspect."

Court records said the police were informed that S.A. possessed and traded in liquor in a flat in Naif. When police raided the flat, it turned out to be a brothel.

Charges

Prosecutors charged S.A. with running a brothel.

"I had nothing to do with that. I worked there for ten days. My job was to cook and serve the food and that was it," contended S.A. before the appellate court.

According to the arraignment sheet, S.A. welcomed sex clients in the flat and led them to prostitutes.

Records said a man named Vijay used to bring customers to S.A., who would collect money and send them inside the flat. An Emirati police sergeant testified that an informant alerted the police that someone was selling liquor in Frij Al Marar in Naif.
