DUBAI A Bangladeshi couple running a human trafficking ring were charged with luring young women from Dhaka with false job promises and turning them into prostitutes in Dubai. A victim brought by the suspects into the UAE told the court: “I came into the country three months ago to work as a maid. My husband had to pay 70,000 taka (Dh3,300) as placement fee,” said S.A., 18.

When she landed in Dubai, R.A., one of the two accused told her he would take her to the house where she was to stay. “When I arrived at the apartment and saw customers coming in and out, I realised I had walked into a brothel. I refused, but they hit me and threatened to cut me to pieces,” S.A. testified, adding R.A. raped her and then started bringing in clients.

The second accused, N.R., made sure the apartment where S.A. was kept was always locked. “She (N.R.)pulled my hair and hit me whenever I refused to sleep with their customers. She threatened to kill me,” the young victim said. Both suspects denied the charges. The next hearing is on June 5.
