Sharjah: A newborn girl was found lying on the road in Jamal Abdul Nasser Street here on Thursday afternoon, an official told Gulf News on Saturday.

The baby girl was found by passers-by. A team from Al Buhaira police station took the baby to Al Qasimi Hospital.

Officials said the girl is estimated to be a few days old and in good health.

Police have launched a hunt to track down the parents of the baby. The baby girl will be handed over to the child protection committee in Sharjah.

This is the fourth such incident in a month. On August 10, a baby boy was found abandoned at around 8.30am in Muweilah.

The boy, also a newborn, had some birth defects. Officials at Al Qasimi Hospital said the baby was born with a congenital defect which can be corrected by surgery when the child’s condition is more stable.

This kind of defect can be diagnosed during pregnancy, officials said, through screening tests to check for birth defects and other conditions.

The baby will be handed over to the child protection committee in Sharjah after his health improves

On July 16, another newborn boy was found atop a building terrace in Al Ramallah area. The police arrested his mother a few days later.

Just a week earlier, on July 10, the body of a newborn was found in a sewage pipe in Sharjah’s free zone.
