Dubai: A three-month-old baby was found abandoned in a Sharjah hospital on Friday, police told Gulf News on Saturday.

The baby was left on a chair at the women’s reception area in Al Kuwaiti Hospital at 4.50pm.

She was spotted by a hospital visitor, who was waiting at the reception queue when she heard the baby’s cries. The woman reported the incident to the hospital police.

A team from Wasit police station and CID rushed to the scene. Investigations to track down the baby’s parents are under way, police said, adding that the hospital’s surveillance cameras will be examined to identify the mother.

The baby, who reportedly has Asian features, was moved to Al Qasimi Hospital. According to hospital officials, the baby is in good health and will be handed over to a child protection committee in Sharjah.

This is the third such incident this month.

On September 20, a nine-month-old baby was found abandoned at the parking lot of Al Safeer Mall in Al Majaz, Sharjah. She was found around noon in a plastic bag. The man who found the baby said he spotted her after hearing her cry. The baby was lying dangerously close to the front wheel of his SUV, with her umbilical cord still attached.

He immediately contacted the authorities. The baby was then handed over to a child protection committee in Sharjah as the police launched an investigation to track down the parents of the child, who police said has fair skin and “Arab features”.

Similarly, a three-year-old Indian boy was abandoned by his parents on September 4 at Khor Fakkan Beach. Police have yet to identify the boy’s parents. An official from the Sharjah Children Protection Department earlier told Gulf News that the child only knows his name and could not name his parents. According to the official, the child is in good health and is being provided with all necessary medical and social care services. The boy was reportedly told by his parents that they had gone to a restaurant and would be back to fetch him.

“My parents went to the restaurant and they will come back,” the boy had told police officers.

Last year, four mothers were imprisoned by Sharjah courts after they were found guilty of abandoning their infants, who were born out of wedlock. They were charged with one year in jail followed by deportation with their babies.
