Abu Dhabi: Licences belonging to 100 drivers have been suspended for three months by the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrol Directorate in addition to giving truck drivers fines of up to Dh10,000 for dangerous overtaking, the Directorate said in a statement on Monday.

The penalties have been issued over the past three weeks as part of a campaign to reduce the number of accidents caused by dangerous overtaking.

More than 40 accidents took place on the Abu Dhabi — Al Ain road and the Dubai truck highway during the past eight months of this year resulting in the deaths of 12 people and injuring 12 others, according to Colonel Hamad Nasser, director of the outer region at the Abu Dhabi Police, Traffic and Patrols Department.

Greater monitoring is now being done on truck roads in order to reduce the number of accidents caused, Major Mohsin Bekheit Al Menhali, Director of External Roads Section of the External Roads Traffic Department at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police revealed.

Al Menhali also advised drivers to abide by their vehicle’s load limit and to ensure that their cargo is properly secured in order to prevent any obstacles for drivers and tyre explosions which occur as a result of loose objects on the road.
