Sharjah: The Sharjah Police recorded 871 violations of motorists who used the hard shoulder during the third quarter of 2017, an officer said on Tuesday.

The statistics showed a drop in hard shoulder violations compared to the same period last year when 2,149 violations were recorded.

Major Mohammad Alai Al Naqbi, director of the traffic and patrol department at Sharjah Police, said using the hard shoulder is a serious traffic offence that often results in deaths or serious injuries.

The police have recently introduced a new radar to catch hard shoulder violators.

Drivers who overtake other vehicles through the hard shoulder pose a danger to everyone on the road because they can come in the way of ambulances or police cars, said Al Naqbi.

"Collisions from these violations have resulted in serious injuries and even deaths,” he added.

Violators face a Dh1,000 fine and six black points, he said.
